GeoHot’s iPhone 3GS Unlock

View original post found on Apple iPhone School authored by Douglas
Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

GeoHot, the developer who brought us the purplera1n jailbreak, has released his iPhone 3GS unlock, purplesn0w. Below is what he has to say about purplesn0w and instructions on how to install it. You can view the original post HERE. This unlock is said to fix Wi-Fi, Battery and Unlock failing issues experienced with the ultrasn0w unlock.

Note: This unlock is different than the unlock released by the Dev-Team (ultrasn0w).

Wifi fails? Battery fails? Unlock fails? You need purplesn0w, the geohot 3GS unlock solution. Now I know you here a lot about different colors of sn0w, but I’m here to tell you why purplesn0w is the best. First off, what is purplesn0w? It’s a soft unlock for your 3GS that I’d actually use day to day. It’s not a daemon that takes any resources, and it doesn’t add a task to your baseband. It’s very close to a true unlock. All it does is patch three files, CommCenter, lockdownd, and your wildcard activation plist (which you need, activate w at&t sim first, no hacktivation support yet). That’s it, no other files are installed. Props to Oranav for the at+xlog exploit!

A full explanation is coming soon, but I think you clever reversers out there will see what it does, and see why it’s so pristine :-) The payload is radically different from other varieties of sn0w. beta as usual, back up first.

Instructions:
- Be sure to have legit activated 3GS
- Disable 3G if you don’t have it (like T-Mobile).
- Add apt.geohot.com to Cydia
- Install com.geohot.purplesn0w
- Watch for success output in Cydia
- Reboot, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone

Firmware 3.1 Beta Brings New Features But Breaks Unlock *UPDATED*

View original post found on Apple iPhone School authored by Douglas

AppleApple has seeded firmware 3.1 to developers and there is already info coming out on the new features. Of course, they have updated the baseband so if you want to unlock, don’t upgrade. Also, If you want to jailbreak, don’t upgrade. There is speculation that if you upgrade, you may never be able to jailbreak again. Here’s info from the Dev Team and then a list of new features.

You’ve seen us give this warning before, and there are only so many ways to say it or come up with a clever title :) But here it is: ultrasn0w users must stay away from any firmware updates past 3.0 (including today’s 3.1 beta) until we release the tools that let you update the firmware without updating the baseband. For most phones out there, baseband updates are irreversible and you’ll lose ultrasn0w.

The 3.0 jailbreak was one of those (rare) times where both the jailbreak and the unlock coincided (the only other time was 2.2). It’s important that people realize that *most* firmware releases aren’t like that, and you need to take steps (via the tools) to separate the firmware update from its included baseband update.

This warning does not apply to the iPhone 2G, which uses BootNeuter for the unlock, not ultrasn0w.

List of new features:

- Non-destructive video editing now gives you the option to trim your clip then “Save as copy…” rather then replacing the original clip.
- Voice Control now works over Bluetooth
- iPhone vibrates when moving icons
- Updated AT&T profile to 4.2
- Updated modem firmware to 5.08.01
- Improvements to OpenGL and Quartz.
- APIs to allow third party apps to access videos and edit them.
- MMS buttons are back in the Messages app for AT&T customers but still don’t work
- Copy & Paste functions also work in the address book as well as in the numeric keypad of the phone application.
- Videos can be saved from e-mail attachments and stored.
- Find My iPhone feature, the audio alert Blasts at full volume regardless of what the ringer volume is set to.
- It does NOT fix the high pitched noise issue, I still hear it when locking my phone.

ultrasn0w iPhone 3G Unlock is Here!

View original post found on Apple iPhone School authored by Brooke

##ICON_NAME## Over night, the Dev-Team released ultrasn0w. ultrasn0w can be used to unlock an iPhone 3G on firmware 3.0. Below is what the Dev-Team has to say:

ultrasn0w for iPhone 3G is ready!

1. Ensure you have upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0
2. Jailbreak your iPhone 3G using redsn0w or PwnageTool (this will also install Cydia/Icy)
3. Run Cydia or Icy
4. Please add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or Icy. That last “o” is actually the number zero “0”! If you use the letter “o” you’ll get an error.
5. Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w
6. Reboot your iPhone 3G
7. T-Mobile USA users should disable 3G before using ultrasn0w
8. Enjoy

List of Jailbroke App Compatibility with 3.0 Firmware

View original post found on Apple iPhone School authored by Brooke

##ICON_NAME## I’m sure some of you have already seen this but, BigBoss has started a nice little app compatiblity list. The list includes apps that are Not Working on the 3.0 firmware, apps that were recently updated and Working and apps that are Working. Below are a few things he has to say about the compatiblity of apps on the 3.0 firmware.

First off, most all regular apps should work on 3.0. The changes were not that severe for most apps to stop working. So if the app is not in the list, it probably works. What probably does not work are apps that rely on mobile substrate or any sort of springboard patching. These all use undocumented APIs.

Next is to understand why some things are not working *for you* that are listed on the “working” list. Many apps require root access and use a trick that involves the dirname command. This command was not present in some older packages in Saurik’s older repository. Saurik set up a newer version of his repository for 3.0 (which will merge back in to the trunk soon). The point is, many of you may have his older repository instead due to one of these reasons:

1) You used an early Icy without its essential updates that do not fix saurik’s repo.
2) You used apt backup to restore your packages and it restored the old repository.
3) You did not accept some essential updates.
4) Some other thing that I am not aware of. But the cause is most likely failing dirname command.

You can check if you have this issue in Cydia: Load Cydia, wait for it to do its thing then go to manage, sources, then look for Telesphoreo in the list. If you see this line of text *exactly*, you have the new repository “Distribution of Unix Software for iPhoneOS 3″ (this is good!) If you see this line: “Distribution of Unix Software for iPhoneOS” (this is bad) you have the *old* repository.

One more thing. If you install something and get an immediate spinning wheel of death, reboot. Some times mobilesubstrate’s install causes this and after a reboot it will be fine.

You can see the full post and view the compatibility list HERE.

redsn0wthe iPhone DEV team has released redsn0w software which is a simple to use MAC and PC software, similar to QuickPwn, which will jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3.0 software (limitations apply, read notes below).

As of right now here is what you can and cannot do with redsn0w. Read carefully before using redsn0w!

iPhone 1st Generation
Everything! redsn0w will both unlock and jailbreak your 1st generation iPhone. It will install Cydia and will be able to change SIM Cards to a different carrier. This is only for 1st gen iPhone users.

iPhone 3G
redsn0w can only jailbreak your iPhone 3G, but not unlock it. This means you can get Cydia but you won’t be able to use another carrier with a different SIM Card. If you to unlock your iPhone 3G with the new 3.0 firmware, you should wait for ultrasn0w which is coming soon. As a side note, yellowsn0w is able to unlock older 2.x firmwares of the iPhone 3G.

iPhone 3G S
Nothing! Unfortunately, redsn0w can neither jailbreak nor unlock the iPhone 3G S. Wait for ultrasn0w.

iPod touch
redsn0w will jailbreak both 1st generation iPod Touch and 2nd generation iPod Touch.

To use redsn0w simply upgrade iTunes to 8.2, the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device (and if you are using an original iPhone 2G, it will unlock it too!)

Official Torrents
redsn0w for MAC
redsn0w for PC

Other files you will need:

iTunes 8.2

Bootloader files V3.9 (BL-39.bin) and V4.6 (BL-46.bin)

Firmware 3.0 for your Device
iPhone 3G S Firmware 3.0
iPhone 3G Firmware 3.0
iPhone 2G Firmware 3.0
iPod Touch 2G Firmware 3.0
iPod Touch 1G Firmware 3.0

Here is a video demo of using redsn0w on the iPhone with Windows

Use iPhone mods and hacks at your own risk! Installing 3rd Party iPhone apps requires you to jailbreak the iPhone before installing the native software and apps. Browse the full list of all iPhone and iPod touch native 3rd party apps filed under the software category.

How to Turn on Tethering in iPhone 3.0

View original post found on Wired: Gadget Lab authored by Brian X. Chen

photoTethering doesn’t officially work in iPhone 3.0 for AT&T customers, but for Mac users there’s an easy tweak to enable the feature in seconds.

Here are the steps, courtesy of MacMegasite.

WARNING: This tweak is not supported by Apple or by AT&T. There’s no guarantee that it will work, and it might  have side effects you don’t want. Proceed at your own risk.

1. Download this carrier update file. Then extract it.

2. Launch the Terminal app and type the following command:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

3. Now launch iTunes. In the iPhone window,  hold the Option key while clicking Restore. Then select the ipcc file in the disk image you downloaded and click OK.

4. iTunes will update the carrier settings. Now under General settings, tap the Network tab and an internet tethering option should appear. From there on, you should be able to easily tether the iPhone via Bluetooth or USB.

We tested this trick on an original iPhone as well as an iPhone 3G, and unfortunately the technique only worked on the iPhone 3G.

We’re somewhat shocked about how easy this was, and we’re guessing it will disappear very soon: It’s highly unlikely AT&T is going to let us tether for free. But for now, enjoy it!

NOTE: This hack appears to disable Visual Voicemail. However, there’s a way to bring it back: On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network. Under “Visual Voicemail,” there’s a field called APN. Enter this text in that field: acds.voicemail

(thanks, tarbob!)

Dev Team Teases Carrier Unlock For iPhone 3.0 Firmware, Will Demo Tonight [Apple]

View original post found on Gizmodo authored by Simon Crisp

The iPhone Dev Team has got us excited (and Apple worried) by announcing they have a fully-working software carrier unlock ready for the 3.0 firmware ahead of its official release.

On Tuesday evening they will do a live demo of the new yellowsn0w carrier unlock working on official 3.0 firmware, just before the big Apple release. While jailbreaking is already possible on 3.0, this is good news for would-be unlockers with an iPhone 3G, though those going for the 3GS will have to wait a bit longer. Unlocked Apple iPhone Available From Buy.com in the U.S.

View original post found on TheAppleBlog authored by Darrell Etherington

picture-14If you’re still skittish about being locked in for a lengthy contract and don’t mind the fact that new hardware will almost undoubtedly be hitting the streets in only a couple of short months, and if you have money lying around not doing anything useful, Buy.com has a deal for you, for the low price of $799. That’s the price you’ll pay for a brand-new, in-box, unlocked Apple iPhone from Buy.com. In fact, it’s better than unlocked, it’s never been locked in the first place, so you won’t have to worry about sketchy jailbreaking/unofficial unlocking procedures if you’re not tech-savvy.

The never-locked 16GB iPhone 3G comes with a full Apple warranty, which is probably not the case with most unlocked units you’ll find on eBay, but Buy.com does warn that you might not be able to understand your product’s instruction manual, since the devices come from all over the world, and not necessarily English-speaking countries. That means this is probably a case of an overstock buy-out from a variety of global carriers in preparation for the June WWDC ‘09 iPhone hardware refresh.

Apparently you can easily swap out SIM cards using these models, so if you’re a globetrotter, this might just answer your prayers. And maybe Om Malik, over at our sister site GigaOM, can finally come back to the iPhone fold using a more dependable network than AT&T’s.  T-Mobile, or any of the 30 different smaller GSM carriers in the U.S., will work with these phones out of the box, according to Buy.com’s product information site. Plus, unlike with unofficially unlocked phones, you can connect to iTunes and update without worrying about being locked out and having to jailbreak again.

I’ve been wanting a second device so that I can devote one to testing, and it’d be nice to have something I can travel with and use pay-as-you-go SIMs with so as not to get charged massive roaming fees, but my heart flutters every time I think about that $799 price tag. Plus, I’m already going to be sufficiently gouged when the new iPhone hardware comes out in June and I have to try to talk my carrier into allowing me an upgrade when I still have two years left on my contract.

Buy.com may just be trying to move more units, but they are claiming that they have very few units left in stock. Anyone planning on picking one of these up? If so, what for? Is the $799 price justified, considering the freedom you get by avoiding a contract/AT&T’s spotty network?

InstallerApp For Mac Installs Jailbreak Apps Without Jailbreaking Your iPhone [IPhone Apps]

View original post found on Gizmodo authored by Jason Chen

Ripdev’s InstallerApp makes installing third-party jailbreak applications on your iPhone slightly easier, by eliminating the need to jailbreak your iPhone at all. You just need to pay $7 for the privilege.

The process works by installing an app onto your iPhone that's not quite jailbreaking, but is enough to allow those not-quite-official applications to get on there. If you gave us the choice of paying $7 or running jailbreak on our phones—which is fairly easy as long as you have some tech knowledge—we'd choose real jailbreak. [Ripdev via 9 to 5 Mac]

MMS
You can send and receive Photos right over the network. Contacts (VCard). Audio files. Or your location. No word about video yet though.

Mail Search

Accessories SDK
You can now communicate directly with other accessories. So you’ll be able to control your TV’s volume for example.

Turn by Turn
iPhone app developers can now create applications that perform turn by turn functionality as you have become familiar with on its google maps application.

Push Notifications
So no background apps but Apple have introduced “push notifications” which will mean you can still receive notifications from applications even if they aren’t actually running – particularly useful for instant messaging clients.

Voice Communication within Applications
So say your playing a shoot em’ up on the iPhone. With this update you’ll be able to talk against your competitor from within the app. Just like you would do with a headset on your desktop.

Update apps from within apps
So games can “sell” you new levels for example.

…When and How Much??

iPhone OS 3.0 will be a free upgrade to all iPhone users, including the first generation iPhones. iPod touch users will be able to buy it for $9.95. The beta version is available to developers now but the final release won’t be until the summer.

With great thanks to Gizmodo for their awesome live coverage of the event!
