Cornstarch + Water + Subwoofer = Amazing Physics Video [Weirdness]

View original post found on Gizmodo authored by Kit Eaton

It’s Friday, you’ve been swimming in a sea of iPhone news… so what’s better to distract you than this amazing vid. It’s a demonstration of the joys of non-Newtonian liquids (look ‘em up: amazing things), showing exactly how they can confound your expectations. In this case it’s a cornstarch fluid on a metal sheet on a subwoofer, behaving as if gravity is optional. Try it yourself: add cornstarch to water until it just gets to a “weird” state, and then play. Fun hey? Just don’t make too much of a mess, particularly if you’re at your desk (and why the heck have you got cornstarch handy there?) [Random Good Stuff]

Tic Tac Toe Reinvented, Gets Mirror Upgrade [Tic Tac Toe]

View original post found on Gizmodo authored by Kit Eaton

It doesn’t take long for kids to learn that when it comes to Tic Tac Toe “the only winning move is not to play.” But there’s something iconic about the game that means it keeps coming back. And designer Shahar Peleg has crafted such an unusual version I’d be tempted to pop it on my desk: it’s mirrored, so the pieces are halved until you place them on the grid. Not as high-tech as cloaked chess, but simple, and surprisingly eye-catching. [Peleg Design via Yanko design, DVICE]

The Biggest Drawing in The World: Created With the Help of GPS and DHL [GPS]

View original post found on Gizmodo authored by Sean Fallon

I have to hand it to Erik Nordenankar and DHL for devising what has to be the most creative fusion of art and technology to date. The concept was simple but brilliant: place a GPS device in a briefcase and mail it via DHL with precise travel instructions over the course of a 55 day period. When all was said and done, the GPS data formed a virtual self-portrait of the artist that spread over 6 continents and 62 countries covering nearly 70,000 miles.

Apparently, the drawing was done as part of an advertising campaign for DHL—which explains why a briefcase that looks like a bomb managed to criss cross the world in an accurate manner. However, DHL does know a thing or two about taking long circuitous routes on their way to a destination, so this ad makes perfect sense. [Worlds Biggest Drawing via Hack a Day]

Photoshop CS 4 Will Use Your Graphics Card to Run at Light Speed, Do Fancy 3D Tricks [Photoshop]

View original post found on Gizmodo authored by matt buchanan

The next version of Photoshop (CS 4) will be juicing up performance by taking advantage of hardware it hasn’t tapped before: graphics cards and physics processors. How much faster is the new 64-bit, GPU-injected Photoshop? At a demo at Nvidia’s HQ, TG Daily watched “the presenter playing with a 2 GB, 442 megapixel image like it was a 5 megapixel image on an 8-core Skulltrail system. Changes made through image zoom and through a new rotate canvas tool were applied almost instantly.” Update: John Nack from Adobe is calling bogus on some of TGDaily’s info, namely the Oct. release date and says the demoed tech is not “promised to go into any particular version of Photoshop.” So take it for what you will.

3D effects are spiffier too, with direct 3D model manipulation and rendering, as well as a snappier 3D accelerated panorama. Overall, it sounds like it could be the most important Photoshop update in years when it drops in October. [TGDaily]

Xtand Makes iPhone Into Very Small, Underpowered iMac [IPhone Accessories]

View original post found on Gizmodo authored by Mark Wilson

The Xtand is a solid aluminum stand that not only holds your iPhone when your hands have better things to do, but does so in that “I’m an aluminum stand that looks like an iMac stand” kind of way. It’s 100% fanboy gear, but we have to admit, the 360-degree rotation and cable management system (aka hole in the back) actually look kind of convenient. No word on price at this time. If only Jeff Foxworthy’s career were alive right now, we could end this post with a decent “you might be an Apple fanboy if…” joke. Our condolences to his family. [JustMobile via MobilitySite]

Phone-unlocking SIM-shim

View original post found on Boing Boing authored by Cory Doctorow

Here’s a nice little bauble: a tiny shim that sits between your phone’s SIM and the phone, which unlocks the handset. Note the admirable use of the grocer’s apo’strophe in the sell-copy — a sure sign of daffy ingenuity.

This SIM unlock is made of a very thin piece of FPC (0.10mm) with a Microcontroller mounted on, that goes between your Operator's SIM card & the phone's SIM socket.

Because of it's very thin & slim design it fits into almost all phone's on the market and can also be easily removed again. It's got Gold Immersion and makes perfect contact with the card and the socket at ALL times.

Brando 3-Way USB Hub Doesn’t Need Power Brick [USB]

View original post found on Gizmodo authored by Kit Eaton

See those two USB plugs on this hub gizmo from Brando? They’re what makes this thing a little bit neat, even if its looks aren’t anything special. Most USB hubs need to draw energy from a power brick if you’re going to load them up with much more than a memory stick and charge up a gadget. But this one plugs into two USB ports on your PC for more juice, so you can connect up to three different devices and charge or sync your phone or camera at the same time via the mini-USB connector. It’s available now for $12. [Brando]

Cankle Fetishists Rejoice Over AC Brick Spy Camera [Surveillance]

charger_dvr_200.jpgThis AC wall adapter is no ordinary AC wall adapter. It’s loaded with an A/V recorder that can save 66 hours of footage to its 2GB microSD card. And even if the wall socket is turned off, a built-in lithium ion battery will keep shooting for 3 hours of glorious, socket-height footage. Yes, that’s the extreme low angle stuff. We’re talking shoes. We’re talking you didn’t vacuum under that couch. It’s just more evidence piling up to an unavoidable fact. In the future, everyone will know what everyone else looks like naked. Or we’ll at least have some hot shots of one another’s bare feet. [product via ohgizmo]
