Heated Mosquito Bite Itch Relief Gadget Makes Scratching Obsolete [Gadgets]

View original post found on Gizmodo authored by Sean Fallon

If mosquitoes find you delicious, this gadget can help you find relief. Apparently, holding its heat source over the bite “helps neutralize the insect-injected proteins that cause itching and swelling.”

Something tells me that good old scratching is still the best medicine—that and avoiding bananas. I seem to recall Mr. Wizard saying something about how mosquitoes love banana-scented blood or something. If that isn't true, Mr. Wizard has screwed me out of a whole lot of tasty summer treats over the years. [Improvements via 7Gadgets via OhGizmo]

Greatest Living Samurai Reduced To Slicing Vegetables, BBs in Slow-Mo [Impressive]

View original post found on Gizmodo authored by Sean Fallon

The noble Samurai has found his role in Japanese society reduced over the decades from a fearsome fighting warrior to a skilled cutter of vegetables and BBs that’s paraded on TV shows for our amusement.

Granted, this video illustrates Samurai Isao Machii’s impressive skill and hand-eye coordination, but until he can slice actual flying bullets instead of BBs, he will be nearly useless in battle (although he is still great for ratings). [Tokyomango via Neatorama]

Hmmm. Do I want my shower rainfall style or waterfall style? I certainly hope this Aquavolo showerhead from Bossini is sturdy—because I would be flipping back and forth like an idiot. [Bossini via Trendir]

The REK Bookcase Grows to Accommodate Your Collection [Bookcase]

View original post found on Gizmodo authored by Sean Fallon

Like the Platzhalter bookshelf I discussed yesterday, the REK features an ingenious design that is both visually interesting and practical for those who accumulate a lot of books.

Instead of splitting down the middle like the Platzhalter, the REK expands and collapses like an accordion to eliminate negative space on the shelf. As you book collection grows, the shelves can be pulled apart in a configuration of your choosing. To be honest, I love the design—but if you have ever tried to move even a small bookshelf you know that trying to alter something this large when it is laden with books would probably be more trouble that it is worth. Caps Lock Trainer Key Painfully Punishes Poor Netiquette [Stop Shouting]

Poor netiquette can be downright infuriating. If you or someone you know has a problem with "shouting" online, the caps lock trainer key should take care of it in a hurry. As you can see, it is a standard key that has been fitted with two fourteen-gauge 10mm lebret spikes. It may seem a little extreme, but sometimes you need to go the extra mile to break a bad habit. Case in point—I routinely flagellate myself for putting my elbows on the table. [Make via CrunchGear]

Hack Apple TV In One Step With the aTV Flash Drive [Home Entertainment]

View original post found on Gizmodo authored by Sean Fallon

The idea behind AppleCore LLCs aTV Flash Drive is that users can reflash their Apple TV and add all sorts of cool and useful functionality without having to waste time scrounging around the internet looking for hacks. According to the product website, all you need to do is install the drive and it will do the rest—without voiding your warranty. But what sort of features will it add?

Key Features: – Play most video formats (DivX, Xvid, AVI, WMV, RMVB + more) – Play DVD files WITHOUT converting them – Sync, organize and watch non-iTunes video files – Browse the web with a Safari based web browser – Rent & watch Hi-Def movies from Jaman.com – Stream media from UPnP(v1) media servers – View local weather forecasts – View RSS Feeds – Enable SSH access – All original Apple TV features remain intact – And much, much more…

The drive will run you $59.95, which is a small price to pay in proportion to the enhanced functionality you will receive. This is in addition to the fact that it can save you a ton of time—not to mention one big headache. [AppleCore LLC via Palluxo via Crunchgear]

The Biggest Drawing in The World: Created With the Help of GPS and DHL [GPS]

View original post found on Gizmodo authored by Sean Fallon

I have to hand it to Erik Nordenankar and DHL for devising what has to be the most creative fusion of art and technology to date. The concept was simple but brilliant: place a GPS device in a briefcase and mail it via DHL with precise travel instructions over the course of a 55 day period. When all was said and done, the GPS data formed a virtual self-portrait of the artist that spread over 6 continents and 62 countries covering nearly 70,000 miles.

Apparently, the drawing was done as part of an advertising campaign for DHL—which explains why a briefcase that looks like a bomb managed to criss cross the world in an accurate manner. However, DHL does know a thing or two about taking long circuitous routes on their way to a destination, so this ad makes perfect sense. [Worlds Biggest Drawing via Hack a Day]

iShield Mirror: For Obsessively Vain iPhone Owners Only [Cellphones]

View original post found on Gizmodo authored by Sean Fallon

The iShield Mirror is, at its core, a two-piece hardshell protective case for the iPhone. However, the manufacturer takes it a step further by adding a film to the surface that functions as a mirror when the phone is not in use. When activated, the film is transparent enough and thin enough to allow for normal usage.

If you’re into hard cases for your phone, I suppose that adding a gimmick like this can prove useful for the ladies (and the kind of dudes that wear sweaters around their necks), but it seems a bit unhealthy to me. iPhone and Touch versions are available for for $29.99. Myka Brings BitTorrent to Your TV [Home Entertainment]

View original post found on Gizmodo authored by Sean Fallon

The Myka is what many Torrent fans have been waiting for—a device that makes it easy to download torrents and play them on your living room TV. You can connect to the internet via LAN or WiFi, it has HDMI, Composite, S-Video and SPDIF ports (nice), your choice of 80, 160 or 500 gigabytes (and USB expansion) and the Linux OS with pre-installed BitTorrent software. You can even transfer videos directly from your computer. Prices are going to fall between $299 and $459, which is more than the Apple TV, but something tells me that there is some built-in value there. Additional pic after the break.
